Let it go

Burn the Note

Write what you want to let go. Then pick up the candle, hold its flame to the paper, and watch it slowly turn to ash.

What is Burn the Note?

Write what you want to let go. Then pick up the candle, hold its flame to the paper, and watch it slowly turn to ash. It is one of 23 small, calm places in Pocket Meadow, a relaxation app for iPhone and iPad.

What it looks and feels like

The room is dark and warm, lit only by a candle on a wooden table. Your words appear on the paper in handwriting. When the flame touches the page, a small glowing edge appears and slowly widens, curling the paper into black and grey ash while sparks drift upward. With sound on, the fire crackles softly and then quietly dies down. It is a slow, steady, almost meditative burn.

Why it can help you slow down

Writing a worry down and then burning the paper is an old and much-loved ritual. Writing helps you put a feeling into words, and watching the paper burn gives the moment a clear ending.

Researchers such as James Pennebaker have studied how putting feelings into words can help people make sense of them. Burn the Note keeps the calming part of the ritual and leaves out the real fire, so you can do it anywhere, safely.

How to use Burn the Note

  1. Open Burn the Note. A paper hangs on a string in a warm, dark room with a candle on the table.
  2. Write what you want to let go, or add a photo. It appears on the paper.
  3. Pick up the candle with your finger and hold the flame against the paper, anywhere you like.
  4. Hold still for a moment until the paper catches.
  5. Watch the fire spread slowly until only ashes are left. Then write another, or rest.

When to use it

  • When you want a clear "ending" for something that has been on your mind
  • After a difficult day, before you go to sleep
  • When you have written something you do not want to keep
  • To mark a small fresh start

Tips for a calmer moment

  • Write freely: nobody will see it, and it is never saved.
  • Choose where the fire starts: corners burn differently from the middle.
  • Turn sound on for the soft crackle of the fire.
  • Use the Slow pace to make the burn last longer.

Try it without the app

You can do a version of this at home with paper and a pen. If you would like to burn it, only do so safely: outdoors or over a fire-safe bowl, with water nearby, and never leave a flame alone. Tearing the paper into small pieces is a safe alternative that many people find just as satisfying.

Good to know

Burn the Note is part of Pocket Meadow Plus, a one-time purchase that unlocks all 23 calm places, with no subscription. It belongs to the Let it go group. You can change how fast every place moves with the pace button on the home screen (slow, normal or lively), and turn sounds and gentle vibration on or off. Pocket Meadow has no ads and no account, and collects no data: what you write, draw or photograph stays on your iPhone or iPad.

Questions

Is the note saved anywhere?

No. The words and photo only exist until the paper burns, and nothing leaves your device.

Can I burn a photo?

Yes. Add a photo while writing and it is printed on the paper before it burns.
